Speakeasy's Act Up Youth Theatre

'Act Up' is Speakeasy's Youth Theatre drawn from the Saffron Lane and Eyres Monsell areas of Leicester, the same area where Speakeasy's offices are based. The group meets at Southfields Library to mount between three and four productions per year. Past successes have included Macbeth, Dr Faustus and Elektra performed at the Phoenix Arts Centre, versions of classics such as The Crucible and Othello, as well as group devised work, theatre trips and more. Act Up is free to join for any young person from Saffron and Eyres Monsell but we will also welcome young people from further a field. There is currently space for new members but we are filling up. We have two groups that consist of members aged between either 7 - 12 or 13 - 19.

Weekly Sessions

'Act Up' now meet weekly on Wednesdays during term time from 3.45pm-5.15pm for those aged 7-12 years, or from 5.30pm-7.00pm for those aged 13-19 years. We meet at Southfields Library, contact us for more information, or to join.

Speakeasy oversee and direct the work of Act Up, support the young people with references for College applications and the like, and provide occasional theatre trips and other extras for the group.

To find out when the next Act Up will be taking place, or for more information about Speakeasy's Youth Theatre work contact us.

Also if you are interested in volunteering to help lead the Act Up sessions please contact Jenny to arrange an interview. You will need to hold a valid CRB certificate and have some knowledge of theatre.

Act Up

"It really is great, it gives kids such great opportunities to use their creativity, their imagination, to learn skills that they can use outside of here and do things that the schools don’t necessarily or are unable to do."

"At a time when we hear nothing but bad things about youngsters it’s nice to see them doing something productive...A very worthwhile project and long may it reign."

Audience feedback

“I feel wonderful…I would like to be an actor when I’m older”  “I learnt that it’s better to work together than on your own”

Participant's feedback from the first ever 'Act Up' production Feb 2002.
